What do I need to do to be able to print in the Open Labs?

Get a Terrapin Express Account.
All of our labs are equipped with Pay-For-Print printers. Therefore you have to get a print account to be able to print. The print account is a debit account. Each printed page costs 10 cents for Black and White or 50 cents for color.

As of the Fall 2008 semester our labs have switched to the new Pay-for-Print system.
Printing using the new Pay-for-Print system is easier, as it works directly from the individual's Terrapin Express account, without the need for a separate print account id and password, or the need to transfer money from Terrapin Express prior to printing. If you do not have a Terrapin Express Account, you can open one with a minimum deposit of $20 in room 1109, South Campus Dining Hall, or you can activate an account online at http://dining.umd.edu/terrapin.

  • Please note that we do not set up print accounts
  • Information on setting up print accounts is located HERE

Can I add money to my Print Account from time to time?

Yes.
It is possible to arrange transfer of money to Terrapin Express funds for your print account
using http://dining.umd.edu/terrapin/activate.

My printout(s) came out poorly. Do I get a refund?

Refunds are given only for poor quality printouts. Save the page(s) that came out badly. Then take the bad printout to the OIT Helpdesk. OIT's policies change from time to time, so call the help desk first at 301-405-1500.

The printer is out of paper or toner! What do I do?

If the printer is completely out of paper, you can notify the IT staff. However, for an immediate solution, you can go to an adjacent lab that has a working printer.

I have money in my account and I have entered my print account ID and password correctly, but no pages come out. What do I do?

Make sure you have sufficient funds available. If you have less than 25 cents in your print account, change the "maximum pages" field from 25 to the number of pages you have (e.g. 2). If this fails, the next thing to do is to save your file on disk and move to another PC and try again. If that fails, try another lab altogether. If you meet failure again, the problem is likely to be a problem in the network -- the connection from the printing folks to our printers is down at some point. You can email the IT staff at eit-help@umd.edu and request help with printing, or try calling the EIT Helpdesk at (301) 405-1634 during normal business hours for further assistance.
