To run applications from the Virtual Computer Lab (VCL), you need to:

  1. Download and install the Citrix client for your platform:

    • Windows XP and Vista - select Download for “Citrix Online plug-in - Web

    • Macintosh - select download for Citrix online web plug-in - Version 11.0
      (see note below)

    • Linux - select version 10.6 English

  2. Create a temporary directory on your machine. This is required for any application to run. For Windows, this needs to be 'C:\Temp'
For a Mac it is a directory named 'temp' in the users home directory. See notes below for info on creating the temp folder.

  3. After installing the client and creating the temporary directory, click on "Go to Login Page" on this page. You will need to provide your Directory ID and Password to the CAS login. After logging in you may double click an application to run the program. When prompted, allow full access to the local temp directory that was created.

Notes:

Creating the C:\Temp Folder on a PC:

  1. Go to My Computer on your PC.
  2. Double Click on C:
  3. From the menubar, choose File…New Folder
  4. Name the newly created folder temp

Creating the Temp Folder on a Mac:

  1. Open the finder and go to the Users folder
  2. You should see a folder with the name you log in to your Mac
  3. Double click on this folder (it has a home icon by it)
  4. Go to the menubar and choose, File...New Folder.
  5. Name the new folder temp.

So if your Mac user login is pete, you would have a folder with the path:
    /Users/pete/temp

Fix for Mac 10.6 Users and Citrix 11.0 Client for Mac:

NOTE: Below should be unnecessary with the 9/30/2009 Citrix Mac client update. We are leaving instructions below in case it may still affect some users.

We have found two problems that may have affect your ability to use our VCL
with Mac 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the latest Citrix Mac client (11.0).

  1. The Safari client will not launch the Citrix apps properly unless it is set to run in 32-bit mode. To do so, first close Safari. Next, Find Safari in the Applications folder of your Mac Finder and select it. Choose File…Get Info from the menubar. Check “Open in 32-bit mode” and close the Window. Run Safari again, go to the VCL and launch an application from the VCL.

  2. The VCL applications are associated with Dazzle, not the Citrix Online Plug-in. Hold the Control-key and click on one of the apps, such as Matlab and choose Save Link As... Save the launch.ica file to your machine. Find the launch.ica file you have downloaded, and hold the control-key and click on it. Choose Other. Choose the "Citrix Online Plug-in" application by going to Library, then Application Support, then Citrix, and then choose Citrix Online Plug-in. At the checkbox at the bottom, choose "Always open with" then hit OK. This should associate the Citrix ICA files on the VCL with the Citrix Online plug-in for future use.
